The discovery of light can be taken as the greatest factor for the development of human civilization. Human treatment of fire has allowed the extension of life to be expanded even after sunset and an artificial source of light also has begun to develop for the convenience of life.
Civilization and illumination developed together in mutually cooperative relation and I guess that they will continue to develop in the future. Today, illumination is being highlighted as a decorative element affecting even psychological stability and enriching life as well as the simple function of brightening only darkness.
Alvin Toffler, a futurist, said that the new millenium would become the summit of information society, the Third Wave. Only after a few years, the Internet supplied made human life more convenient and mankind demanded more than the thing.
Material abundance for maintaining livlihood and mental abundance coexists when man pursues happiness. He will need exceptional, rare, peculiar and particular things rather than what many people possess or expensive things.
Such trend causes the inevitable changes in the field of the design and of ceramic lighting. Thus, this thesis focuses on producing original ceramic lighting combining functionality with decorativeness.
This thesis tried to concentrate on studying 'wall lamp' as indirect lighting called 'bracket' among various forms of lightings with abundant environment which can be created in living space. For this, I surveyed and made a general investigation into the data and literature about lighting, and understood the kinds and classification methods of lighting and so on. After that, I examined Korean ancient lamps and modem ceramic lamps, investigated the functions of living space, a base of life, and examined the changes and advantages resulting from installing wall lamp. And I drew up a tentative plan for this work by using the image of wall in the philosophical and historical senses obtained from the experience of this researcher.
This work stressed the image to express by using primarily plate molding and wheel throwing, and Terra Sigillate mixed with highly fire-resistant pigment.
In addition, this thesis tried to produce a ceramic wall lamp with the value as a superior craft and present its possibility in lighting market where lighting uniformed in mass production system accounts for most of percentage.
