The term "sexploration" is the combination of the
words: sex and exploration. The term crosses a continuum of meanings, as sex
resides in a very personal and private realm, although we are seeing that being
tested in media on a daily basis. Throughout this thesis, the relationship
between sex, society and art, specifically in clay, is explored. Because of the
durability and permanence of fired clay, it is possible to study history through
the manifestations and the stories told through ceramics. These findings provide
an outline of a long tradition of sex within the field of ceramics, and their
links to the sexual prowess of a culture; a peek into what was socially sexually
accepted and denounced.
With society’s coming of age (sexually speaking),
came along various opinions and considerations related to contemporary sexual
issues. Not only was society practicing various sexual behaviors, it also began
to be open to notions of the repercussions of such behavior: STD’s and social
disdain. However, as a result, openness towards sex, both welcomed and scorned
by society, paved the path of heightened sexual awareness, which spanned around
the globe.
The relatively new rise in AIDS created a pandemic wave of death
and fear. The need to understand and control this disease was paramount and
attempts to create AIDS Awareness were at the forefront of national and global
initiatives. The art world, which was also shaken by this catastrophe, would
have their messages and opinions heard and seen around the world as well. In
this thesis, examples of works of contemporary artists are examined in effort to
understand social sexual/health issues.
Further, the writer’s works will be
examined and viewed in attempts to re-invoke an awareness of AIDS. The 80’s and
90’s saw an infusion of AIDS-related artwork, however, still AIDS/HIV related
cases surge throughout the world. Therefore, the viability of this work is not
simply reinforced by the success and strength of the work itself, but also by
public acceptance of this work. The question that is to be answered here is:
Does society need to revive an awareness of AIDS? Or do we, as a society, have a
grasp of the AIDS situation?
섹스플로레이션이란 섹스(성/sex)와 익스플로레이션(표출/exploration)의 합성어를
말한다. 이 용어는, 비록 우리가 방송매체를 통해 일상에서 자주 접하고 있지만, 매우 개인적이며 은밀하고 사적인 영역으로서의 의미를 동반한다.
본인은 이 논문을 통해 성과 사회, 그리고 예술분야, 그 중에서도 특히 도예와의 상호 관계를 다루어 보았다. 구워낸 도기의 내구성과 영속성을
통해 입증된 자료와 전해진 이야기들에 관한 역사를 살펴보며 이러한 자료들의 발견이 도자기 예술이라는 영역 안에서 오랜 성(sex) 역사의 흐름과
하나의 성(sex) 문화의 과감한 표출 사이의 연관성을 접하게 해주며, 이를 통해 사회적으로 어떤 부분들이 받아들여지고 또한 어떤 부분이 비난을
받았는지 엿볼 수 있다.
성(sex)의 측면에서 이야기할 때, 사회와 시대가 변천해가면서 그 세대의 성(sex)에 관계된 여러 가지
견해와 우려를 동반하게 된다. 여러 형태의 성적 행위들이 사회적으로 표출되면서, 그러한 행위에 대한 반응도 나타나기 시작했는데, 그것이 바로
성병(STD: Sexually Transmitted Diseases)과 사회적 냉대였다. 그러나 이러한 성(sex)의 개방은 결과적으로
사회로부터 받아들이는 쪽과 냉소하는 쪽의 두 가지 다른 찬반의 견해를 가져왔으며, 전 세계적으로 성(sex)에 대한 의식을 높이는 길을 열어주게
되었다.
비교적 새롭다고 할 수 있는 에이즈의 출현은 인류를 죽음과 공포의 도가니로 몰아갔다. 이 질병에 대한 이해와 통제의 필요성은
간과 할 수 없는 일이었으며, 에이즈에 대한 의식을 높이려는 의지는 국가적으로나 세계적으로도 가장 급선무적인 과제였다. 이러한 대 재앙으로 인해
예술세계에서도 큰 동요가 일었으며 예술가들도 작품을 통해 그들의 뜻을 세상에 알렸다. 이 논문에서는, 당대 예술가들의 작품들을 통해, 현
세대에서의 사회적 측면에서 보는 성(sex)과 건강에 관한 문제들의 이해를 돕고자 한다.
더 나아가, 본인(필자)의 작품소개와 설명을
통해 에이즈에 관한 의식을 더욱 더 고무시켰으면 한다. 80년대와 90년대에는 에이즈와 관련된 예술 작품들이 종종 나타났으며, 에이즈/HIV와
관계된 작품들이 여전히 세계 전역에 퍼져나가고 있다. 그러므로 이러한 작품들의 생존력은 단순히 그 작품 자체의 성공과 우수성에 의해서만이 아니라
그 작품이 대중에 의해 어떻게 받아들여지느냐에 따라서도 보강되는 것이 사실일 것이다. 여기서 답변되어야 할 의문사항은: “사회에 에이즈의 관한
의식을 재 고취시킬 필요성이 있는가?” 아니면, “사회가 이미 에이즈의 현 주소를 인지하고 있는가?”이다.
